Jack Layton: Reactions To His Death

I didn't know anyone about John F. Kennedy before he died. I learned about him after. I didn't know or understand anyone about politics or international affairs. But I remember how sad I was about his death. I couldn't get enough data about him fast enough. In my part of the world then, there was no Tv and of procedure no internet in those days. Up to this day, I'm still fascinated by this dead man. My kids all the time tease me about it. They couldn't understand how I can still have a soft spot for John F. Kennedy.

They couldn't until Jack Layton's death. They, like the majority of Canadians, couldn't get enough data about his life, his death, his funeral. We looked at the whole funeral service on Tv and they were very somber. By the end of Saturday, we were saturated by all things Jack Layton. We understood why so many citizen felt the need to build a makeshift shrine, to write in chalk, to openly weep. This very communal outpouring of emotion is so very un-Canadian. I don't remember this ever happening in Toronto.

John F Kennedy Quotes

My kids and their generation will all the time remember the impact this man had on all of us. Unlike me and Mr Kennedy, they knew Jack Layton, heard him when he spoke at their colleges and universities, seen him as he was riding around in Ottawa. The homeless will remember him because he brought their plight to our attention. I will all the time remember him from the turn over before the last election. There aren't many politicians who are articulate, have presence and command concentration and respect when they speak. He did and that impressed me a whole lot.

My house and I have discussed why this man had such a monumental impact on us, on so many Canadians. He transcended religion, race, age, sexual orientation and political views. We felt the same way when Princess Diana, Michael Jackson and Terry Fox died.

So what is it about these citizen who generated such grief among us, such communal grief? In modern-day society, communal bonds replace familial bonds and so we grieve as a society when something tragic happens like natural disasters, terrorist acts, and deaths of sublime people.

There are four key elements that originate communal grief like we shared over Jack Layton's death.

1. We are profoundly affected by the deaths of sublime citizen when they are unexpected like Jack Layton's or Michael Jackson's or imaginable like Terry Fox's or tragic like John F. Kennedy's and Princess Diana's. Individuals find relax in other individuals sharing the same unexpected loss.

2. We feel more attached to the death depending on how close the someone was to some type of power buildings - political, cultural, media or philanthropic. The more they impacted communities and addressed issues, the more we knew about them. For example, Jack Layton touched lives not only in political ways but in cultural ways. A politician in higher office has a larger constituency thereby creating a larger pool of mourners.

3. The longer someone is in the communal eye, the more time they will have to originate the many connections that make communal grief possible. The death of a new politician will likely not impact as many citizen as Jack Layton's, plainly because not many citizen will know of him/her.

4. The likeability factor or charisma of the individual plays a huge part in the reaction of the public. Pierre Trudeau was not so visible in communal when he died but we all shared that communal grief not only because of his former role but also because he was charismatic. The more admittedly we associate to someone with a likeable personality, the more we will feel the loss.

It's only at the end of a life that we recognize what good a someone has done while their errors and errant behaviors are right away reported. Why do we do it this way? Shouldn't we honor each other in life instead of death? But we don't and this makes the sadness heavier.

Jack Layton has joined my Dad on the list of deceased citizen I still feel emotional about. They've all sparked something in me - something still inexplicable which reminds me of this quote by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: "The lives of great men each remind us to make our lives sublime and departing leave behind us footprints in the sands of time."
