The best goals are straightforward and they state clearly the results you hope to achieve. John F Kennedy announced in 1962 that Usa will put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. The goal was straightforward even if the road to get there was uncharted and very complex. any way with imagination, planning, resources, perseverance and patience, Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon in July 1969.
Specific
An attainable goal needs to be specific, inescapable and concrete. Something you want to have in your life, not something you want to eliminate. The clearer you are about what you want the easier it is to achieve. Instead of "I want to feel at home in my new country" how about, "I want to have four close friends to share New Year's Eve 2009" You need to be exact so that you know what achieving the goal will feel like.
Measurable
By describing a measurable outcome you give yourself a scale on which to presume your progress. How many people do you know now, how often can you make arrangements with people you like, how often would you need to meet people in order to share experiences in your new community. If you have a starting point and a finishing point you can portion your strengthen and settle when you need help, training, resources or time to celebrate because you are on track.
Achievable
Although both Branson's and Kennedy's goals were pretty left field, they were based on more than Leonardo da Vinci's quote of "If you can imagine it, it can be achieved". Elements of each objective had been proven and both individuals were very creative. The interrogate you need to ask yourself is "do I have passage to the resources that are required and do I have the influence to make this happen?" This is one that you undoubtedly need to look at because if your goal is not achievable by you, you will need to make other plans.
Realistic
So, a reality check would be a good next step. Realism looks at practicality and this may be a good opportunity to value the benefits and the effects of what you are hoping to achieve. Are there any ill effects to your goal? How does obtaining your goal impact other people? Is it favourable? Is it worth the time and endeavor you plan to invest and how does it impact the environment. Have you determined the worthiness of the aim, in that the qoute is not that one might aim too high and fail, but that one might aim to low and succeed? Something difficult can inspire excitement and motivation whereas something easy can become boring and de-motivating. Instead of naturally sharing a New Years Eve barbeque, you could organise a Nye charity event.
Time sensitive
Once all these considerations have been hashed out, the most leading criteria of a goal, is that you know when it must happen. There must be a timetable and a deadline or it may never happen.
How Smart are your goals?
What I have described above is the Smart goal formula. Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time sensitive are the constituents of goals which are reached by people who are motivated and stimulated by what they strive for.
Sometimes, keen to a new country feels like living on the Moon but by working out what you want to achieve and setting your goals you can make approximately anywhere feel like home.
