Fallen Woman - Culture in the 21st Century

This is a story about two women from distinct countries, distinct cultures; two women who never met; who would not share the same fate; two women who experienced distinct extremes of a culture gone wrong.

One of those women was hardly a woman, but a girl of eighteen. Her name was Roop Kanwar, and she lived in a settlement in Rajasthan, India. Some 7 months into her marriage, her life ended as she was burned to death-forcibly, agreeing to witnesses-on the funeral pyre of her husband. Her death caused a controversy, and divided a nation steeped in religious superstition and misquoted scriptures.

John F Kennedy Quotes

The other woman was just a year older than Roop when she first came into sense with the same land, the same people, the same culture. Some years later, she moved to India, where she currently lives in a settlement on the banks of the River Ganges.

That other woman is me. I will never share the same fate as Roop Kanwar, because I was born and bred in Australia. Some would say my upbringing was devoid of real culture, and they may be right. Others would say I had freedom of choice and the quality to avoid the same fate as Roop, and they are also right. Whatever, the fact remains that both cultures-eastern and western-have something to offer, and somewhere in the middle of the supposed decadence and moral bankruptcy of the west, and the pseudo-spirituality of the east, lies a truth that can set whatever free. Even Roop Kanwar...

I came over the story of Roop for the first time in 1998. I was living in Jaipur, and every now and then in newspapers and magazines her name would come up. Five years later, I was given a book entitled "Death By Fire" by Mala Sen. It was the story of Roop, and it left me feeling dissatisfied. That wasn't the fault of the author-it was the story itself. Most disturbing was the acceptance by a large measure of the nation that this was somehow "okay," that the burning to death of a beautiful young girl was a succeed of her purity and piety, and that seven generations before and after her were benefited by such a violent and gruesome death. I concluded that only a twisted form of a rich and philosophically marvelous culture such as the one Roop came from could condone such a barbaric act.

Throughout Sen's book were references to another, thought about the definitive study on sati, the practice of widow burning outlawed by the British in the 18th century: "Sati: A Study of Widow Burning in West Bengal," by Sakuntala Narasimhan. By this stage I was a resident of West Bengal, so the topic was 'local'. I began to read Narasimhan's book with some trepidation. My concern was twofold, an angle of vision from both sides of the fence. Firstly, I wondered how much Narasimhan's study was drawn from an ultimate feminist viewpoint, which was, as far as I could see, no explication to the problems that exist for women in India-even if it is an understandable reaction. Secondly, from the opposite end of the argument, I was concerned about how much of the book was based on a proper understanding of the scriptures quoted by those who were propagating widow burning based on some so-called "religious" standpoint, and how well Narasimhan could therefore argue the point on a reasonable and logical basis without being drowned in the religious melee that surrounds such issues.

I found Narasimhan's book fascinating. She held a PhD, was a published author and a noted performer who toured India, impressing audiences with her beautiful singing. She was man with an educated concern about the topic, a beautiful and feminine woman who hadn't hardened her edges in her desire to right the wrongs of the culturally warped environment of which she was a product. Her writing was solid and based on a clear and unbiased understanding of the scriptures that those she was arguing against were quoting. Overall, the book was an involving and refreshing coming to an old and ugly problem.

After reading Narasimhan's book, I realized that there was one crucial point she had missed: for a culture that has its roots in the most intricate and detailed spiritual philosophy available, no one seemed to have much understanding of it, and no ifs ands or buts it wasn't being offered as a explication to the ills the country faced. It led me to request what this culture was that the entire country claimed to follow, and I soon realized that it was something way off track than what it started out as. In fact, it seemed to be steering way out of control, heading with a thought about foot on the accelerator towards the materialistic mecca of the west, far from the spiritual roots that had bound it so long.

What does the western culture have to offer that can substantiate its claim to being "more advanced" than the culture that did this to Roop Kanwar, and why does her country seem so desperate to find their solutions in the west? While the women of India have an antique culture as their safety (and a reasonable whole of time it does work that way) stories like this Roop's are evidence that discrimination is rife, and worse, that it is entrenched in the "culture" of the entire country, crossing all religious boundaries, thereby granting it an immediate bona-fide with any religious sector in any collective class. The added hypocrisy is hard to swallow: that a country that apparently follows a stricter moral principle than maybe any country on the planet suffers from the reluctance to admit their human frailties; or worse, disguises them as "spiritual strengths." Roop's case is a sad reflection of a culture that believes a woman who can no longer be enjoyed by her husband might just as well burn on his funeral pyre. Her only other choice, agreeing to neighbors, was that Roop live a life devoid of any collective status: shave her head, wear only white saris, not eat fancy food (basically just rice and dahl for the rest of her life), not remarry and have children, not partake in any religious festival or collective event-in fact, that she never be seen in collective again, not even to draw water from the settlement well; her nearnessy would be thought about inauspicious by the entire village-the fact that she prolonged to live would be enough to bring all bad fortune down upon the residents of the village. In other words, even if she lived, she would be thought about "dead." Such a end hardly seems to fit into the tenets of a compassionate, spiritual culture, and one would be forgiven for thinking that the western culture seemed more 'advanced.'

Yet humans share common experiences, regardless of boundaries of culture, country and corporeal designation. The surroundings may differ, but the pain is the same. The only inequity in the middle of the plight of women in the west and the east is that the westerners, with our inbred independence and concepts of equality in the middle of the sexes, commonly administrate to escape. The Roop Kanwars of this world don't have that option.

I met my first husband at 19 and married shortly after. I don't know why it went so rapidly to hell the way it did, but I remember the first punch. I belief it was a cliche that habitancy used when they said they "saw stars before their eyes" when they'd been hit. It's not. The contents of my head swam in a murky, thick blackness; shooting stars exploded before my eyes, and my movements slowed to a surreal pace. That was the first time he broke my nose-it wouldn't be the last. We had a rifle in the house, and I woke up one morning simply knowing in my heart that I was about to use it on him, and if I didn't do the job right, he'd use it on me. I decided he wasn't worth spending time in prison for, and no ifs ands or buts wasn't worth dying for, so I left him. I have never seen him since.

There was one night, though, that was surrounded in so much sheer terror that it is hard for me to relive. So I don't-I repeat it as an observer. It seems to have happened to man else, and in a way, it did. I am no longer the girl who went straight through this, but in Roop Kanwar I saw it all over again.

I can't remember the details of how it happened. I just remember going home alone, leaving my husband where he was because he had to learn, somehow, that he couldn't talk to me like that. It wasn't long before he followed, but this time I belief I was ready for him. The house was locked up, but that infuriated him further. As he smashed the window next to the front door and reached in to unlatch the bolt, I grabbed my purse and keys and fled out the back door before he saw me. I ran over the road and hid in the bushes. I still remember the terror of hearing his voice calling out to me, oblivious to the neighbors and the late hour, yelling what he would do to me if he got hold of me. As I sat crouched in the bushes, trembling with the fear that he would find me, too scared to breathe, I knew that he meant it, and I knew if I wanted to live, I couldn't go back in that house. I sat and prayed. It was all I could do. Finally, the rage abated, and he left the house, walked down the street, and disappeared into the night.

I didn't hesitate. I ran toward the house, fast unlocked and threw open the trunk of the car, and ran inside to acquire as many of my belongings as I could. I jammed the trunk full, slammed the lid, filled the back seat, and backed out of the drive. I drove for 2 hours, to the nearest city. I was thousands of kilometers away from my family, alone in a city where I knew no one. But I got out. I had a car, I had money, I had a way to save myself, and that's a whole lot more than most of the women in India have. agreeing to the "culture" in India, I'm a fallen woman. But at least I'm alive.

There's not much inequity in the middle of Roop's situation and mine. Would I have been thrown on a fire? no ifs ands or buts not-but that doesn't negate the principle that women live in fear of their lives in every country; that those who claim a force of culture to serve their own needs are as hazardous as any unprincipled, materialistic country with seemingly no cultural foundations. What kind of lessons or inspirations, then, can a western woman hope to acquire from such a culture? Is there whatever safe bet it can offer western women?

Roop Kanwar's home state, Rajasthan, was and still is to a great degree a state that recognizes "purdah", or the veil. Women are still covered at all times by a veil, and were rarely, if ever, seen in public. Their living arrangements were detach from the men, and their lives were based colse to an enclosed society of women. The last reigning Queen of Jaipur, Gayatri Devi, was a well-traveled woman who graced the cover of Vogue; headed the list of "Most beautiful Women in the World;" rubbed shoulders with British royalty and American society; and who John F. Kennedy claimed was, on her entry into politics, "the woman with the most staggering majority that whatever has ever earned in an election," a claim backed up by the Guiness Book of World Records. Originally a Princess from the Bengal state of Cooch Behar, she married into the Jaipur royal house as the third wife of the reigning monarch, Sawat Man Singh, known to the world as Jai Singh. He was a gallant, handsome, romantic figure; an instant headline maker, the polo-playing Maharaja of Jaipur whose team trounced the British repeatedly, and who took the world by storm with his collective and sporting escapades in London, Paris, Rome and Monte Carlo. When Gayatri Devi married Jai, he already had two wives, both of whom observed full purdah. He wanted Gayatri to lead women out of what he perceived to be an intensive situation, and she dedicated her life to the emancipation of women over India. Although her life was only slightly touched by purdah, she had this to say in its support:

"It is difficult for Westerners to understand why...women were perfectly article with what seems, from the outside, a hopelessly dull and claustrophobic existence. In fact, their lives in purdah were much fuller and more active than one would imagine. Apart from running a large household, a woman with a wide circle of children, grandchildren, and relatives was the focal point of the whole family. As a girl in her own home, she would have been taught the basic accomplishments thought about valuable for any Hindu girl: cooking, sewing, taking care of children. Later, as a young bride, she would learn the ways of her husband's family, and eventually, as a mom and grandmother, her authority and her responsibilities would increase. maybe most foremost of all, she would never be without companionship and she would all the time be needed. Zenana life [the women's quarters], with all its limitations, had profound and solid compensations, too."

Gayatri Devi makes a strong point about the amelioration of the inner society of women. This female self-reliance is part of the traditional Indian culture, known as the Vedic culture, and there are more safe bet accounts of its benefits than negative-leaning more towards feminine than feminist. Women find equilibrium in a strong hold group of friends and advisers upon whom they can rely, as the women in cultured India did, and in some parts still do. Such a network of hold also serves to alleviate the stress settled on a man to be that sole victualer of everything, which is no ifs ands or buts only a banal cliche. Those who pursue it, or are willing to determine for it, are inevitably disappointed. Of course, this is in no way meant to cast aspersions on our men. It's simply a matter of fact that their quality to be all that a woman needs is a Hollywood myth, propagated repeatedly in every form of media. Unfortunately, a great division of the world is weaned on such myths; our conditioning runs deep and impacts our responses, our choices. We are products of our upbringing, without a doubt.

For Roop Kanwar-for all of us-the past is irretrievable; for those who suffer in a similar fashion, the future may not look any brighter, be they in the west or the east. I don't have any solutions: maybe none of us do. Some things, like the Indians will tell you, are simply karma.

I can't help thinking, though, that all over the planet, from London's High Streets to downtown Sydney, India has been the flavor of the year for a long time now. I'm sure in our pursuit of all things Indian, we might peruse a itsybitsy more intimately the richness not only of their fabrics and interiors, but the finer elements of their antique culture. Somehow I feel that Roop would appreciate such a safe bet approach.

a. Direct comparisons - clubs in the same commerce with the same resources and opportunities as the good-to-great group but showed no leap in performance, which were: Upjohn, Silo, Great Western, Warner-Lambert, Scott Paper, A&P, Bethlehem Steel, Rj Reynolds, Addressograph, Eckerd, and Bank of America.

b. Unsustained comparisons - clubs that made a short-term shift from good to great but failed to maintain the trajectory, namely: Burroughs, Chrysler, Harris, Hasbro, Rubbermaid, and Teledyne

Wisdom In A Nutshell:

a. Ten out of eleven good-to-great business leaders or Ceos came from the inside. They were not outsiders hired in to 'save' the company. They were whether citizen who worked many years at the business or were members of the house that owned the company.

b. Strategy per se did not detach the good to great clubs from the comparison groups.

c. Good-to-great clubs focus on what Not to do and what they should stop doing.

d. Technology has nothing to do with the transformation from good to great. It may help accelerate it but is not the cause of it.

e. Mergers and acquisitions do not cause a transformation from good to great.

g. Good-to-great transformations did not need any new name, tagline, or open program. The leap was in the operation results, not a revolutionary process.

h. Greatness is not a function of circumstance; it is clearly a matter of conscious choice.

i. Every good-to-great business had "Level 5" leadership during pivotal transition years, where Level 1 is a extremely Capable Individual, Level 2 is a Contributing Team Member, Level 3 is the Competent Manager, Level 4 is an effective Leader, and Level 5 is the administrative who builds enduring greatness straight through a paradoxical blend of personal humility and pro will.

j. Level 5 leaders display a compelling modesty, are self-effacing and understated. In contrast, two thirds of the comparison clubs had leaders with colossal personal egos that contributed to the demise or continued mediocrity of the company.

k. Level 5 leaders are fanatically driven, infected with an incurable need to furnish sustained results. They are resolved to do anyone it takes to make the business great, no matter how big or hard the decisions.

l. One of the most damaging trends in modern history is the tendency (especially of boards of directors) to make your mind up dazzling, celebrity leaders and to de-select inherent Level 5 leaders.

m. inherent Level 5 leaders exist all colse to us, we just have to know what to look for.

n. The research team was not seeing for Level 5 leadership, but the data was marvelous and convincing. The Level 5 discovery is an empirical, not ideological, finding.

o. Before answering the "what" questions of vision and strategy, ask first "who" are the right citizen for the team.

p. Comparison clubs used layoffs much more than the good-to-great companies. Although rigorous, the good-to-great clubs were never ruthless and did not rely on layoffs or restructuring to heighten performance.

q. Good-to-great management teams consist of citizen who turn over vigorously in quest of the best answers, yet who unify behind decisions, regardless of parochial interests.

r. There is no link in the middle of administrative compensation and the shift from good to great. The purpose of compensation is not to 'motivate' the right behaviors from the wrong people, but to get and keep the right citizen in the first place.

s. The old adage "People are your most important asset" is wrong. citizen are not your most important asset. The right citizen are.

t. whether person is the right person has more to do with character and innate capabilities than definite knowledge, skills or experience.

u. The Hedgehog conception is a conception that flows from the deep understanding about the intersection of the following three circles:

1.What you can be best in the world at, realistically, and what you cannot be best in the world at

2.What drives your economic engine

3.What you are deeply passionate about

v. explore your core values and purpose beyond naturally development money and integrate this with the dynamic of preserve the core values - stimulate progress, as shown for example by Disney. They have evolved from development short thoughprovoking films, to feature distance films, to theme parks, to cruises, but their core values of providing happiness to young and old, and not succumbing to cynicism remains strong.

w. Enduring great clubs don't exist merely to deliver returns to shareholders. In a truly great company, profits and cash flow are absolutely vital for life, but they are not the very point of life.

"If You'Re Doing Something You Care Deeply About And If You Believe In It, It'S Impossible To dream Not Trying To Make It Great."

The wedding of Jacqueline & John F. Kennedy

The wedding of Jacqueline & John F. Kennedy Video Clips. Duration : 2.08 Mins.

Jacqueline Lee Bouvier and John F. Kennedy were married on the morning of September 12, 1953, in the picturesque St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Newport, Rhode Island. On the morning of September 12, 1953, more than 750 guests filled St. Mary's Church to watch as John Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier exchanged wedding vows in a ceremony presided over by Archbishop Richard Cushing. For the occasion, the church had been decorated with pink gladioli and white chrysanthemums. Boston tenor Luigi Vena sang "Ave Maria." Following the 40-minute ceremony at which a papal blessing was read, the new couple emerged into a throng of 3000 well-wishers as they made their way by motorcycle escort to Hammersmith Farm, the Auchincloss estate overlooking Naragansett Bay. After two hours of greeting family and friends in a receiving line, the bridal couple joined the 1200 invited guests for champagne and dancing to the music of Meyer Davis and his orchestra. For the first dance, the Kennedy's chose "I Married an Angel." The couple cut a five-tier wedding cake, and then a luncheon of fruit cup, creamed chicken, and ice cream sculpted to resemble roses was served.

    A Prayer for the Farmers

With so many farmers getting out of the enterprise of farming due to mad cow disease, miniature money for their crops, smaller families, cities taking over the fertile farm land, big enterprise tantalizing in on and taking over small farms, I concept it was time to identify the good that the farmers do for us.

Vegetables don't grow in cans.....meat doesn't fall from trees. Without the farmers, we would be starving!! I hope that you will join me in remembering the farmers and when you have the opportunity, thank the farmer for hanging in there, despite the poor beef prices, the poor pork prices, etc. Rember, the price you pay in the store is Not the price the farmer gets -- it's not even close!!

    Lord, what have we done

    to our land

and to those who work the fields?

    We have taken

    without giving back

    without thought

    to the consequences.

    Tearing up,

    tearing down,

    uprooting life,

    and surface everything v
    with a hard, unforgiving substance.

    You gave us this earth

    to watch over

    to look after.

    Forgive us Lord

    for what we have done.

Our ways bring death to the land.

    We have been so concerned

    with our desires,

    that we have dismissed

    the needs of others.

    In our lust for faster

    bigger, better(?)

    we have lost sight of

    those who helped

make our country what it is today -

    the farmers.

    Help us to remember

    as we go about

    our daily chores and

    preparing meals,

    that without the farmers

    we would not eat.

    Without the trees,

    we would not breathe,

    and the soil would erode

    causing dust all around.

    Grant to the farmers

    strength to continue,

rain and sun for their crops,

    faith in You

    and in humanity,

    that they may keep on

    providing the food we need

    to survive.

    God bless the farmers.

    predominant Speeches

Lights off, spotlight on you, a hundred eyes popping in your face and you have to deliver a speech. Possible? For renowned habitancy like presidents, prime ministers, spokespersons, media channel anchors very possible. But for local habitancy who have never stepped on to a stage knees start to crumble and the voice chords seem to go on a strike.

The same is not with personalities that can talk at hours on length to hundreds and thousands of habitancy staring at them. In fact they can deliver the speech so well that it shakes the ground below your feet. They hook you on to every word they speak and quivers can run down your spine when they say something true to your very being.

Speakers are present in every generation. History records Queen Elizabeth for all her defining speeches to her soldiers and subjects that led her to be the most noteworthy country in the world. This is what she said when she addressed the English army at Tilbury Fort - 1588 when Spanish invasion was imminent.

"Let tyrants fear; I have always so behaved myself that, under God, I have placed my chiefest strength and safeguard in the loyal hearts and good will of my subjects. And therefore I am come surrounded by you at this time, not as for my recreation or sport, but being resolved, in the midst and heat of the battle, to live or die surrounded by you all; to lay down, for my God, and for my kingdom, and for my people, my honour and my blood, even the dust.

I know I have but the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart of a king, and of a king of England, too; and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realms: to which, rather than any dishonour should grow by me, I myself will take up arms; I myself will be your general, judge, and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field."

America has always had great speakers as presidents like John F. Kennedy. Here is an excerpt from one of his speeches, "My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, either you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sell out which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own."

John F. Kennedy's words have been immortalized with his renowned line, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. Which is still used to date in many variations. A noteworthy statement like that always makes the onlooker think for himself.

Even India has had mountainous speakers like P. Nehru, Indiara Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi and more. Gandhi is known to move not only a nation but the entire world with his philosophy. Here is an excerpt from his quit India speech, "I believe that in the history of the world, there has not been a more surely democratic struggle for freedom than ours. I read Carlyle's French Resolution while I was in prison, and Pandit Jawaharlal has told me something about the Russian revolution. But it is my conviction that in as much as these struggles were fought with the weapon of violence they failed to realize the democratic ideal. In the democracy which I have envisaged, a democracy established by non-violence, there will be equal freedom for all. Everybody will be his own master. It is to join a struggle for such democracy that I ask you today. Once you realize this you will forget the differences in the middle of the Hindus and Muslims, and think of yourselves as Indians only, engaged in the common struggle for independence."

If You Aim For The Moon, You May Land surrounded by The Stars

    Vison

Richard Branson's meteoric success was not an accident it was a follow of a series of visionary goals. When he set up his first firm from a collective phone box he knew that he wanted sell music at discounted prices and he went about doing just that. He kept his eye on the goal and when he reached it he asked himself where he wanted to go next and Tubular Bells became music history.

The best goals are straightforward and they state clearly the results you hope to achieve. John F Kennedy announced in 1962 that Usa will put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. The goal was straightforward even if the road to get there was uncharted and very complex. any way with imagination, planning, resources, perseverance and patience, Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon in July 1969.

    Specific

An attainable goal needs to be specific, inescapable and concrete. Something you want to have in your life, not something you want to eliminate. The clearer you are about what you want the easier it is to achieve. Instead of "I want to feel at home in my new country" how about, "I want to have four close friends to share New Year's Eve 2009" You need to be exact so that you know what achieving the goal will feel like.

    Measurable

By describing a measurable outcome you give yourself a scale on which to presume your progress. How many people do you know now, how often can you make arrangements with people you like, how often would you need to meet people in order to share experiences in your new community. If you have a starting point and a finishing point you can portion your strengthen and settle when you need help, training, resources or time to celebrate because you are on track.

    Achievable

Although both Branson's and Kennedy's goals were pretty left field, they were based on more than Leonardo da Vinci's quote of "If you can imagine it, it can be achieved". Elements of each objective had been proven and both individuals were very creative. The interrogate you need to ask yourself is "do I have passage to the resources that are required and do I have the influence to make this happen?" This is one that you undoubtedly need to look at because if your goal is not achievable by you, you will need to make other plans.

    Realistic

So, a reality check would be a good next step. Realism looks at practicality and this may be a good opportunity to value the benefits and the effects of what you are hoping to achieve. Are there any ill effects to your goal? How does obtaining your goal impact other people? Is it favourable? Is it worth the time and endeavor you plan to invest and how does it impact the environment. Have you determined the worthiness of the aim, in that the qoute is not that one might aim too high and fail, but that one might aim to low and succeed? Something difficult can inspire excitement and motivation whereas something easy can become boring and de-motivating. Instead of naturally sharing a New Years Eve barbeque, you could organise a Nye charity event.

    Time sensitive

Once all these considerations have been hashed out, the most leading criteria of a goal, is that you know when it must happen. There must be a timetable and a deadline or it may never happen.

    How Smart are your goals?

What I have described above is the Smart goal formula. Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time sensitive are the constituents of goals which are reached by people who are motivated and stimulated by what they strive for.

Sometimes, keen to a new country feels like living on the Moon but by working out what you want to achieve and setting your goals you can make approximately anywhere feel like home.

Vietnam War Quotes : "Now we have a problem in making our power credible, and Vietnam is the place." - John F. Kennedy, 1961 - "We are not about to send American boys nine or ten thousand miles away from home to do what Asian boys ought to be doing for themselves." - Lyndon B. Johnson, 1964 - "Tell the Vietnamese they've got to draw in their horns or we're going to bomb them back into the Stone Age." - Curtis LeMay, 1964 - "If we allow Vietnam to fall, tomorrow well be fighting in Hawaii, and next week in San Francisco." - Lyndon B. Johnson, 1965 - "It's silly talking about how many years we will have to spend in the jungles of Vietnam when we could pave the whole country and put parking stripes on it and still be home for Christmas." - Ronald Reagan, 1965 - "People ask me who my heroes are. I admire Hitler because he pulled his country together when it was in a terrible state in the early thirties. But the situation here is so desperate now that one man would not be enough. We need four or five Hitlers in Vietnam." - Nguyen Cao Ky, 1965 - "Their casualties are going up at a rate they cannot sustain..... I see light at the end of the tunnel." - Walt Whitman Rostow, 1967 - "Somehow this madness must cease. We must stop now. I speak as a child of God and brother to the suffering poor of Vietnam. I speak for those whose land is being laid waste, whose homes are being destroyed, whose culture is being subverted. I speak for the poor of America who are paying the double price ...
